Propofol Shortage

Attention PICU RNs:

There is a shortage of Propofol. See the message below for details.

"Nursing team,

    We are experiencing a critical shortage of Propofol.  Propofol has been on shortage for quite some time but we have been able to maintain supply.  At this time we are unable to get 100mL and 50mL vials and only small amounts of the 20mL vial.  PropoVEN, which was allowed by the FDA to be imported, is not an option at this time either because supply is unavailable.  Therefore, we have worked with a variety of clinicians, anesthesiologist, and the sedation committee to develop the following plan and restrictions. 

RESTRICTION:

PEDIATRICS

Propofol use in the PICU:

·Propofol restricted to 20mL vials for emergencies only

Propofol in the OR:

·         Beginning Monday, 2/18 the OR Pharmacies will begin dispensing Propofol 20mL pre-filled syringes instead of vials

o   Pre-filled syringes have a 72 hour expiration at room temperature

o   Pre-filled sryinges will be placed in the AcuDose cabinets in the anesthesia workrooms for after-hours needs

Propofol use sedation team

·         Use alternatives whenever possible

·         For cases where propofol (alternatives are contraindicated or ineffective) is needed the Children’s Hospital Pharmacy will provide Propfol 20mL pre-filled syringes to the procedural RN"
