The hospital compliance team rounded in the PICU today and found multiple HIPPA violations. Everyone please be reminded of the HIPPA requirements below and comply IMMEDIATELY. 7C staff need to be sure you are compliant as well.
1. You cannot put anything into a trash can that has a patient's name or label. THIS INCLUDES EMPTY MEDICATION BAGS AND SYRINGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You must either discard in a red bag trash can or peel off the label and discard the label in the paper shredder confidential bin. This also includes EKG strips....they must go into the shredder, not in the regular trash.
2. Two COWs were found to be unattended with patient information showing. You MUST minimize the screen any time you walk away from the COWs. I know this is cumbersome, but we have to be 100% compliant or we can be disciplined for a HIPPA violation. Be especially careful about patient information in bed 1 in PICU. I have sometimes found the chart open and the COW up and very visible to everyone coming through the front door.
I appreciate the time and space challenges these regulations present, but please help me keep us HIPPA compliant.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Melinda
