Emergency Worker Hang Tags
Emergency Worker hang tags have been placed in all PICU and 7C employees' mailboxes. Keep the hang tag in your car, the tags are for emergency workers and are to be used in the event of an emergency/disaster - this will give you access to MUSC if the roads are blocked, etc.
Please let Amanda know if you did not receive one, she has extras.

Changes in Phlebotomy Service Hours effective August 19, 2013
Dear MUHA Leaders,
Nancy Reilly Dixon, Director of Laboratory Services, and I have worked closely with MUHA Human Resources, Helena Bastian and Lynn Campbell, in performing a comprehensive reorganization of Phlebotomy Services. The goal of the reorganization is to utilize staff more effectively and efficiently based on patient volume. To achieve this, phlebotomists will no longer be assigned exclusively to inpatient or outpatient units. Instead they will be utilized in both settings as workload demands. This reorganization will be most apparent in the inpatient setting.
Effective August 19, 2013 phlebotomy inpatient rounds and hours of operation will change as follows:
1. ART inpatient phlebotomy rounds will be scheduled at 4am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm.
2. Main/Children’s Hospital inpatient phlebotomy rounds will be scheduled at 5am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm.
3. Phlebotomy service will end at Main/Children’s Hospital and ART at 8:30pm.
4. Phlebotomists will no longer be available for routine or STAT draws scheduled outside of routine rounds.
This reorganization has resulted in the retention of our experienced, full time phlebotomists. The greatest impact on the phlebotomists has been in the requirement to train in both inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy areas and many have been required to change their hours to earlier in the day to accommodate the heavy morning inpatient draw. One non-clinical coordinator position was eliminated in the reorganization. The Phlebotomy reorganization is consistent with the tenants of MUHA Performance Excellence and will build a foundation to successfully meet the operational and financial challenges with which we all are confronted.
Please direct any question to the Laboratory Director’s office at 2-8757.
Thank you,
Marilyn

Good Luck and Farewell to Jen Franks and RD coverage until another RD is hired
Dear Team -
Sadly my last day of August 2nd is fast approaching. I wanted to let you know that I am leaving you in very capable hands during the transition before a full-time replacement is hired. Laura Kenny is the new Ketogenic RD and will also be taking on the Metabolic inpatient/outpatient responsibilities. She can be reached at pager #12278. Kelli Miller, RD, LD, CNSC will be covering the PICU and 7C during my absence. She currently works with Heme/Onc and outpatient GI. Since she will still be covering her other patients, she will likely not be able to round. If you have questions for her, she can be reached at pager #12452. On a side note, if anyone would like to be involved in the interview/hiring process for the new PICU dietitian, please contact Mary Basel (2-4100). Any input from the team would be greatly appreciated. It has been a pleasure to work with each and every one of you. Thank you again for being amazing teachers and coworkers!
Sincerely,
Jennifer

A Word of Thanks from John Sanders
Dear PICU and ECMO friends,
I know over the last several weeks you have worked with children in very difficult situations. Just by the nature of the work you do, I certainly understand that almost all the children you work with are difficult. However, I think that we would all agree that this summer has been unique in the emotional nature of the cases that you have worked with. I have always been amazed by the clinical expertise that you have and the care that you provide on a daily basis, but it is also how you treat the children and their families that is quite special. Even in very difficult situations like the ones you are currently dealing with, you provide such a positive impact on the families that will be a part of them for the rest of their lives. It is like I talk about with our new employees, we are so priviledged to be a part of these families lives.
While I can talk about the care that you provide and how you are able to help your families, I am also very aware that cases like you are working with take their toll on you too. It is because of your passion to care for the children that make you so good. But it is also because of that passion that it makes it hard when you have to deal with situations with tough outcomes. As you care for our families and the children in the unit, I also hope that you care for yourselves.
I want to thank you for what you do every day and make sure you know that I could not be more proud who you are and how you care for our families. There is no place where a child and their families could get better care.
Thank you,
John

Blood transfusion audits next week - Please be sure to follow proper procedures
Dear Nurse Managers,
Every two years the Transfusion Service performs an audit of blood transfusions to measure compliance with established blood administration policies and procedures. Transfusion Service staff will follow randomly selected blood products from dispense to the start of transfusion. An audit tool focused on critical steps in the blood transfusion process is used to standardize the assessment. Hospital wide compliance is tallied and results will be shared with the nursing service.
Please let your staff know that the transfusion audit process will begin on July 22nd.
Thank you,
Karen

Important Staff Meetings Next Week and a Kudos to both Units!
We will have staff meetings next week on both of the units to review information from the ADM (Administrators, Directors, and Managers) Meeting this week (formerly the All Leader Meeting with Dr. Cawley). We will also review each unit's employee engagement and culture of safety scores. Please try to participate as everyone's input is necessary for making our action plans for improvement.
PICU Staff Meetings: Monday and Wednesday at 0730
7C Staff Meetings: Tuesday and Thursday at 0730
These meetings will be a bit lengthy so let's try to get started on time and move through as quickly as possible. On Friday, I will post all of the information on the blog so those of you who cannot attend can read the info. I am always happy to entertain any follow up questions in person, via phone or email.
It has been a crazy week for both units. Thanks to all of you for holding it together and providing excellent care to our patients and families! A really big thanks to 7C for floating up so much to help the PICU. Also, a big thanks to Erin O'Donnell for staffing three night shifts and to Karen Loury, Julieanne Walsh, Mary Carla London, Natalie Ball, Angi Kemp, and Alicia "5 days in a row" Piede for pulling OT. You guys ROCK! I'm working diligently to get some new staff on board and PICU has a traveler starting July 29th.

All Staff: time report on email
All 7C & PICU Staff:
I have set it up to where you will automatically start receiving a time detail report from the Kronos Timekeeping System every other Monday at 2:00 p.m. You should receive the report of your time starting this Monday, July 15, and then every other Monday (which is always a payroll processing week). The report should show your time from the previous two weeks (previous pay period).
Most of you used to receive this report, however, there were some glitches in a system upgrade that made it to where I could no longer set up the report. With that said, if you do not receive the report starting this Monday (7/15) at 2:00, then PLEASE let me know and I will try to fix the issue.
If you have a payroll issue, you will still receive a separate email from me so that you are aware.
Amanda
Education Updates
Cultural Competency: Each quarter I will post new information and an article regarding cultural competency. I began with Spanish-speaking families and encouraging the liberal use of interpreters, since this is our most common language barrier. I posted a very interesting article in the break rooms on the perceptions of Mexican-Americans with critically ill children in the hospital. It is only a few pages and highlights some common practices to be aware of. Let me know what you think, or if you have ideas for future topics. There is also a free class "Cultural Competency in the Workplace" offered on Sept 6, 9AM-12PM, in Walterboro. Melinda and I plan to attend, so email me if interested.
Test-Taking Strategies: I've posted sign-up sheets for a test-taking strategies workshop I plan to hold in a couple weeks (7/22, 7/23, and 7/24). I attended a GREAT workshop last month and the instructor gave me her powerpoints to pass on to anyone interested in studying for CPN or CCRN. I consider myself a poor test-taker, but applying her strategies helped me get 5/5 questions correct at the end of the course, and they certainly weren't PICU specific. I think this could really help a lot of us.
Annual Competencies: Your competency packets are complete and I will be seeking you out in your super-user groups to go over validation methods. Once I've reached everyone to "teach the teacher" I will hand out the packets for you all to complete (at your own pace) by June 30, 2014.
Imporant Reminder: Please DO NOT confirm RT orders. We have discussed this several times, but we continue to receive complaints from RTs on both units. We have passed this on to the MDs to assist in notifying RTs of new orders and also to encourage them to enter the orders under RT to prevent RNs from confirming. Any other ideas to improve this process? Sorry for all the info at once, the blog was down all week and we're still working out glitches :)

Mandatory Town Halls
Please remember you MUST attend a Town Hall. You can either go to the CH specific ones or the all hospital ones. Please do not wait until the last minute. I still do not have any details on a CATTS option. That may only be offered for those who are off campus employees. You can view the webinar from home, you just have to let know and do the sign in sheet.
See the earlier blog post with dates and times!
Thanks so much, Melinda

Friday Updates
Hope everyone had a great 4rth of July. Sorry some of you had to work, but seeing the cupcakes and cookies leftover in the breakrooms makes me happy that you at least made the work day fun. I appreciate the time with family and friends that all of you sacrifice to provide excellent care to sick children. I know their families are thankful you are here 24/7.
Just a few updates for the week:
Staffing Update:
I have hired an RN I from the Meduflex Pool, Jaime Maskill, for PICU. Jaime received her BSN from Belmont University and has been working in the peds med/surg Meduflex Pool for the past 3 months. Jaime did her nursing leadership rotation in the PICU at Vanderbilt and is very excited to join our team. She will transfer from Meduflex effective July 15.
I have one other RN II position posted for PICU and am waiting approval for another RN II position for PICU and an RN II position for 7C.
Performance Excellence/Huron Update:
I informed all of our Weekend Work Option staff earlier this week that the WOW program will be discontinued effective January 13, 2014. These amazing RNs have been very gracious in their response to this sad news. I am so thankful they have helped us maintain the highest quality of care on these difficult to fill shifts.
One reason I am moving forward with filling any positions we have open is to lessen the impact the WOW discontinuation will have on our weekend staffing requirements. The unit schedulers and I will be working diligently to determine how we can best cover the weekends. I will update you all as those plans come together.
Management Update:
Amelia Little, BSN, has accepted the Nurse Manager position for 7 East. I am so very thankful for all she has done for our units and thrilled to know that she will take her great leadership skills to our sister unit 7E. I will miss Amelia tremendously, but am so proud of her and wish her much success!
Employee Engagement Survey:
Thanks to all of you who participated in this year's employee engagement survey. Our scores for both PICU and 7C improved over last year. In the coming months, I will be holding staff meetings to review our survey results and make action plans for each unit to continue our success. Thank you all for making PICU and 7C great places to work!
See you all next week! A little Friday humor to get your weekend going...

Clarification on Town Halls
Hey guys. I know "mandatory" meetings are not always welcomed. To explain a bit...every year the employee satisfaction survey consistently lists "high level leaders do not communicate effectively with the staff" as an opportunity for improvement. Town Halls were designed to get the word out about overall hospital activities and perfomance. However, attendance has historically been very poor, so staff are still not getting the message and still listing this as an area needing improvement. Dr. Cawley has made communication his top priority in these times of many changes in healthcare. Having an interactive forum that promotes 2-way communication is the most effective way to ensure staff are aware of what is going on and able to provide input to high level leaders. It is like the theory that if you don't vote, you shouldn't be able to complain about elected officials. Thus, Town Halls will now be mandatory. They are once each quarter so this is only 4 times per year that you need to attend. You can attend in person, via webinar, or as a last resort a review in a CATTS format will be offered. Obviously the CATTS method is not interactive and that is why staff are encouraged to attend in person or via webinar.
Changes are happening every day at MUSC and as committed employees, we need to meet high level leadership half-way by attending the Town Halls. I can tell you the meetings are brief, informative, and a great opportunity to voice your concerns, ideas, and questions.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thanks for all you do to make MUSC a great place!

Practice Council
PICU Leadership will now be called PICU Practice Council to prevent confusion regarding who should attend. ALL are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting, which takes place the second Tuesday of every month at 8AM in the break room. This is your opportunity to let your voice be heard and to make positive changes in our practice. Currently the group is working on completing the Nurse-Driven Sedation Protocol and competencies. We would love to see more faces at these meetings. Next meeting is Tuesday July 9.
7C- We are working on re-starting the 7C Practice Council. Emily Dorman has agreed to co-lead this group, but we are still in need of an RN leader. Anyone interested? You all work so well as a team and you maintain such positive attitudes- I can see you doing great things with this group.
Children's Hospital Practice Council meets the 4th Wednesday of every month from 11-12 in 501CH. It would be great to have Peds Crtitical Care at these meetings as well. Anyone interested? We could alternate each month between PICU and 7C attending so it's less of a commitment. You all have wonderful ideas and valid complaints. Practice changes should NOT be made without the input of the nurse at the bedside. Let me know if you would like to represent Peds Critical Care at these meetings.
Thanks everyone!

Glucometer QC's
PCTs- Please remember to perform QC's on the glucometer once a shift. There was an incident recently where an emergent blood sugar was needed for a coding patient and the glucometer was due for QC. This delayed care and was completely preventable. If anyone is having access trouble with the glucometer, please email Kimberly Washington. Any questions, please let me know. Thanks!

Update from Leader Meeting
For those of you who I was not able to personally speak to the past two weeks, here is the update from the MUHA All Leader meeting with Dr. Cawley in late June. For complete details, see your email from Dr. Cawley dated today. I will summarize the things most important to our units. This summary will come out each month about a week or two after our meeting with Dr. Cawley. I will do my best to communicate this information in person to as many of you as possible. However, I know it is not realistic to think I can catch all of you in a one to two week time period, so the Blog will be the final mass communication of information. It will be very important for all of you to read the blog at least once a week!
Melinda
- Town Halls will be mandatory for all staff beginning July 2013.
- Held once per quarter, dates/times will be posted and also an option to review contents online.
- Benefits Update:
- Beginning July 24th paycheck, the employee contribution rate to the pension plan (SCRS) will rise from 7% to 7.5%. MUSC will also pay in more for each employee.
- Also July 24th paycheck, those in the alternate pension plan (PORS) will have an increased contribution to 7.84%.
- These increases were made by the State of SC and MUSC and all state employees must comply.
- Prudential will no longer offer long-term care insurance to NEW applicants as of 6/30/13. Those who already have it will be able to retain it.
- MUHA Organizational Goals
- We are currently only meeting 2 of our 10 MUHA organizational goals.
- See Dr. Cawleys email for complete details.
- We are meeting our Net Income Goal and our Outpatient Growth goals.
- CH is at or just below our Patient Satisfaction Goal of 85%ile. (7C and PICU are 99%ile!).
- On another positive note for both PICU and 7C, our employee engagment scores improved for both units this year!!! I will be receiving a more detailed report to review with each unit and we will use that information and your valuable input to make action plans for further improvements in the coming year.
- HURON & Incentives
- Huron's fee schedule is fixed with no variable component and is very back loaded so they must produce positive results before receiving payment.
- Thus far, we have identified over $61 million in savings, implemented changes to net $15.5 million in savings and confirmed a savings thus far of $4.5 million.
- Staff Evaluation Changes
- Next year, the weights will change on the staff evaluations.
- Currently they are as follows: 50% behavior, 25% unit goals, and 25% job duties.
- In FY2014, they will be 35% behavior, 35% unit goals, and 30% job duties.
- Our unit goals are:
- 7C: Patient Satisfaction and Hand Hygiene compliance
- PICU: CAUTI Prevention (decreased # of foley days) and Hand Hygiene compliance.
- Also, the rating scale will change next year. One a scale of 1 to 5, meeting goal will net you a score of 3 (presently it is 4). Thus, we will have to exceed our goals to obtain a score of 4 or 5.

PEWS
7C- Great work with the PEWS scores. I have heard a bit of feedback already so I placed a comments/concerns list on the envelope of completed sheets in the medroom. Please list any feedback there so it is sure to get back to Tanya and the safety team. We want this to work for us, so we may need to tweak it a bit. Your feedback is always helpful. Thanks everyone!
