WINS
Pillar: People
Welcome to Caroline – Caroline will be helpful in bringing a family perspective to the Ops group.

MUSC Performance Excellence
Pillar: Finance
*Refer to PowerPoint presentation.
Environmental issues are impacting MUSC Medical Center.  Economy has kept people from receiving care.  Working on access and faculty recruitment.  Also working on medical home development.
Medicare/Medicaid cuts - anticipate $64.4 million cuts in next 2 – 3 years.
Focus is on generating more revenue.  Last year, Children’s Hospital increased charges.  However, collection of money decreased.  Potentially more revenue with new peds faculty on board.  Per Dr. Webb, we’re at $1 million in the red, last year at this time we were in the black.
A “Nursing Checkbook” has been rolled out.  Census, staff and acuity of patients is entered every 4 hours.
Children’s Hospital is careful with labor hours having  < 2% overtime.

Infection Control Update
Pillar: Quality
No CLABSI for 37 months and no CAUTI for this fiscal year.  No current data on VAP. Last VAP was May 2012.

Education Update
Pillar: Quality
  1. Blood Warmer: there is concern that physicians are calling the warmer a different name.  We have a fluid warmer that every nurse is comfortable using.  The fluid warmer attaches to the IV tube and instructions are attached.
  2. Interpreters: reminder to use interpreter services or the language line.
  3. Isolation compliance: no changes in isolation compliance.  Encourage families to gown up or change clothes when in common areas of hospitals.  Caroline will encourage families to gown up when on the unit.
Family Mailboxes
Pillar: Service
The NNICU has as family mailbox program.  Each family gets a mailbox and a composition book to journal.  The mailbox is a place where meal invites, parking passes, etc. can be placed – it’s a useful communication tool.  This is an especially benefit tool for families who are on the unit for a long time.
Could this be a tool that is implemented in the unit? The mailbox could be attached to a bedside table.  Also, a journal for families would help them to track progress of their child, etc.

Trauma Update
Pillar: Growth
There is a Peds Trauma course on March 15.

VPS
Looking into expanding VPS data.  Focusing on quality standards.

Announcements
Caroline encouraged Ops group to consider PICU families who might be interested in serving on Family Advisory Council.  The council is mostly made up of NNICU families.  Families who are not local could possibly teleconference into the meetings.
Nurse’s Week is in May – voting for Nurse of  the Year closes on April 9.

Staff Recognition
Pillar: Service
Natalie recognized Jason for working with CVVH patient.
Patricia recognized Mary Carla London who floated from 7C and cared for a diabetic patient.
