Magnet Updates!

Hi all! I have decided to do a monthly blog post to update everyone on our Magnet Journey. I am very excited/hopeful that our nurses will receive the recognition we deserve! You all do such amazing work despite challenges you face everyday! (Thanks to Dorothy Whisenhunt from 9E for e mailing the Magnet Champions the blueprint to this message!)

This month we are still focusing on Transformational Leadership and recognizing how our leaders represent accessibility, communication, and visibility. Here are some examples:

• Melinda demonstrates her accessibility to the staff by keeping her office door open and helping the unit when we become busy.

Communication is represented on our unit with our blog posts, monthly practice council meetings and bulletin boards!

• Lastly, visibility is demonstrated by the charge nurse and Erin, our educator, rounding on the staff and making sure everyone is doing okay throughout the day.

Next I wanted to update you on how far MUSC has come with this Magnet Journey! We are applying for Magnet status August 2014 and we are well on our way. Here is just some of what we have already accomplished:

• Developed a Nursing Strategic Plan (in the Magnet Manual)

• Increased our Nursing Certifications: baseline – 9%, now – 22% Congrats Jason! (good luck to those taking the exam this month!)

• Developed our First Nurse’s Annual Report

• Marilyn Schaffner, our Chief Nursing Officer, created her initiative which is “Professionalism”.

• Increasing our BSN percentage by directing new ADN hires after July 1st to apply to a BSN school within 2 year and graduate within another 2 years. *We have established online university partnerships to help aid the nurses going back to school. Make sure you check out the nursing professionalism web site to see if your school offers a discount for MUSC nurses!* http://mcintranet.musc.edu/magnet/empowerment/professional_development/tuition_assistance.html

• Striving to meet our Nursing Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) including: Falls with injury, CAUTI, Pressure ulcers, CLABSI

Finally, dont forget MUSC’s VISION and MISSION.

Vision: Top 25 among academic medical centers

Mission: Best Practices for Best Outcomes

  1. I was going to email this to my unit, but using the blog is a way better idea!
