Nancy Reilly Dixon, Director of Laboratory Services, and I have worked closely with MUHA Human Resources, Helena Bastian and Lynn Campbell, in performing a comprehensive reorganization of Phlebotomy Services. The goal of the reorganization is to utilize staff more effectively and efficiently based on patient volume. To achieve this, phlebotomists will no longer be assigned exclusively to inpatient or outpatient units. Instead they will be utilized in both settings as workload demands. This reorganization will be most apparent in the inpatient setting.
Effective August 19, 2013 phlebotomy inpatient rounds and hours of operation will change as follows:
1. ART inpatient phlebotomy rounds will be scheduled at 4am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm.
2. Main/Children’s Hospital inpatient phlebotomy rounds will be scheduled at 5am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm.
3. Phlebotomy service will end at Main/Children’s Hospital and ART at 8:30pm.
4. Phlebotomists will no longer be available for routine or STAT draws scheduled outside of routine rounds.
This reorganization has resulted in the retention of our experienced, full time phlebotomists. The greatest impact on the phlebotomists has been in the requirement to train in both inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy areas and many have been required to change their hours to earlier in the day to accommodate the heavy morning inpatient draw. One non-clinical coordinator position was eliminated in the reorganization. The Phlebotomy reorganization is consistent with the tenants of MUHA Performance Excellence and will build a foundation to successfully meet the operational and financial challenges with which we all are confronted.
