A Word of Thanks from John Sanders

Dear PICU and ECMO friends,

I know over the last several weeks you have worked with children in very difficult situations. Just by the nature of the work you do, I certainly understand that almost all the children you work with are difficult. However, I think that we would all agree that this summer has been unique in the emotional nature of the cases that you have worked with. I have always been amazed by the clinical expertise that you have and the care that you provide on a daily basis, but it is also how you treat the children and their families that is quite special. Even in very difficult situations like the ones you are currently dealing with, you provide such a positive impact on the families that will be a part of them for the rest of their lives. It is like I talk about with our new employees, we are so priviledged to be a part of these families lives.

While I can talk about the care that you provide and how you are able to help your families, I am also very aware that cases like you are working with take their toll on you too. It is because of your passion to care for the children that make you so good. But it is also because of that passion that it makes it hard when you have to deal with situations with tough outcomes. As you care for our families and the children in the unit, I also hope that you care for yourselves.

I want to thank you for what you do every day and make sure you know that I could not be more proud who you are and how you care for our families. There is no place where a child and their families could get better care.

Thank you,

John
