PICU and 7C staff,
It seems like the last few weeks have been filled with trauma, drama, tragedy, sadness, and a few high spots (like our recent ADEM patients coming back to visit all well and whole!). I could probably name at least 50 things I have seen you do or heard about that have been just AMAZING! The family-centered care focus you strive for each day is more evident on our units than anywhere else at MUSC. I know it is incredibly difficult to try to separate ourselves from our patients/families, and I know they appreciate your compassion, dedication, high quality care, and relentless patient advocacy.
Please try to take some time to unwind, relax, love on your families, and support each other. I'm sure we all have a little PTSD from such demanding work and I am so thankful you all are up to the challenge. I just want to make sure we are seeking healthy ways to rejuvenate (yes, wine is good for your cholesterol!).
If anyone has any ideas on how we can better debrief from crazy or sad events or anything else I can do to promote a healthy work environment, please let me know. We will be reviewing our employee engagement scores in the next two weeks and I want to include this in our action planning. It wasn't on our list of challenges, but after all we weathered together in the past year, it is on my priority list.
Thanks again for all you do. Please feel free to use this comment thread to give a shout out to your peers!
Warmly,
Melinda
