Epinephrine for Anaphylaxis

Below you will find updated education for administration of Epinephrine for anaphylaxis in the Children's Hospital.  Due to many mistakes/misunderstandings with IV vs IM administration, this information will be posted by all orange tackleboxes and in each bedside chart/wall-a-roo.  Please see myself or Jill Thompson with any questions.

Need Epinephrine for ANAPHYLAXIS?
WHERE to find:
Any ORANGE TACKLEBOX – on the top shelf

HOW to DOSE:
Use the VIAL of concentrated 1:1,000 (1 mg/mL) epinephrine on top shelf.

0.01 mg/kg. Using 1:1,000 (1 mg/mL) solution,
dose = 0.01 mL/kg)
Max dose = 0.5 mg (0.5 mL).

Dose also listed on Emergency Drug Sheet at each bedside.

HOW to PREPARE:
Use a 1-mL syringe and IM needle found in top shelf of orange tacklebox.
Draw up epinephrine dose.

HOW to ADMINISTER:

Inject IM.
(Never IV- even if patient has an IV line)
Infant: 25 gauge, 5/8 inch IM needle
Child: 25 gauge, 1 inch IM needle
Adolescent: 21 gauge, 1 ½ inch IM needle
Inject into anterolateral aspect of thigh.
(vastus lateralis)

WHEN to REPEAT:
May repeat in 5 minutes if needed,
for a maximum of 3 doses.
